With a pink and white journal in hand over twenty-nine years ago, the desire to be a business owner began. 
I am Starlin Montgomery Short—a creative soul who embarked on the entrepreneurial odyssey in 1995. Fueled by a passion for computers and a penchant for crafting resourceful items—custom calendars, shirts, clocks, business cards, etc. — I wove a narrative of creativity and determination. In those early years, I navigated the uncharted waters of entrepreneurship, becoming the proprietor of one of the few double-minority print businesses in my area. Yet, the path wasn’t paved with mentors, and I treaded carefully, driven by youthful determination and a mind bursting with innovative business ideas. With an innate ability to “see” business opportunities everywhere, my journey reached heights.
But success bore the weight of burnout, a relentless foe that crept in after years of tireless growth. The foundation I meticulously built crumbled in the blink of an eye, leaving me overwhelmed, absent to clients, and questioning my purpose. A failed real estate deal stemmed from a broken promise of a family member— sent me spiraling. I faced loss, financial ruin, and an emotional abyss.
For the first time, I felt powerless, unable to conquer life’s challenges. Desperation engulfed me, pushing me to the brink. Yet, from the depths of despair emerged a lifeline—car sales. “You are a business inside a business,” a manager’s words breathed life into my deflated spirit. I embraced the role, winning awards and learning invaluable lessons. But deep within, the yearning for creativity persisted. So, I embarked on a renaissance, rebranding, and rediscovering the authentic purpose of my business. The question lingered: If you were never paid for something you truly love, what would it be? The answer echoed through the corridors of my soul—I was born to create, to help others flourish in their businesses. Today, adorned with the scars and wisdom of my journey, I’ve found my authentic pathway. My purpose intertwines with a desire to create and a commitment to help others thrive. As I navigate this pathway, I look forward to the endless possibilities, as long as I'm able to SEE my way forward.
